“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities,
but in the expert’s there are few.”
Here’s a famous parable that illustrates the idea of the beginner’s mind:
There was a Japanese Zen master named Nan-in who lived during the Meiji era. During his days as a teacher, he was visited by a university professor curious about Zen.
Being polite, Nan-in served the professor a cup of tea.
As he poured, the professor’s cup became full, but Nan-in kept on pouring. As the professor watched the cup overflow, he could no longer contain himself and said, “It is overfull. No more will go in!”
Nan-in turned to the professor and said, “Like the cup, you are too full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?”https://www.gloveworx.com/blog/simple-cup-of-tea-story/
Though this parable focuses on Zen, the sentiment can relate to many other practices.
In yoga, some people become very focused on doing a pose one way and one way only. Images from magazines and Instagram can sometimes give the impression that there is only one way because the poses featured on these platforms are usually only the most challenging version of the pose. But there are many versions of each pose and many different ways to experience a pose. Being open with a Beginner’s Mind can help us to be open to experimenting with different expressions of a yoga pose.
